Leaving for home

Martinique has been Milanto’s Caribbean charter base for the past few years, so coming into the marina and seeing the same faces on the dock, in the capitainerie, the patisserie and even the laundry, is like coming home. We used the time to rest, reset and repair Milanto and ourselves, so now with two extra crew we point Milanto’s bow towards home, first via Antigua, the Azores, Gibraltar and finally Viareggio, Italy.

But first, we had the sad task of parting ways with our band of brothers from Sea Lover and Loumaran, with whom we have sailed in convoy and navigated together through challenging times in past year.

A beginning and an end, in the year of Covid

This is a long overdue update for our ‘News‘ page. But the website would have told you of our intention to partake in the World ARC 2020-2021 circumnavigation that began on January 11th, 2020. Well, we got as far as April in Tahiti before the rally was suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the immeasurable challenges that seemed to lay ahead if we proceeded - towards the west we went!

It wasn’t easy, but we now know that it also wasn’t impossible. We decided to take it one day and one destination at a time, and today, perhaps symbolically on Easter day, and three days before our original planned date of return to St. Lucia, we crossed our outgoing track from January.

As I said to Lorenzo at the ‘finish line’, the world around us seemed to have stopped this year, but the sea kept moving - carrying us along with it.
