One week today

"Driving northwards, towards the pole, and once we get far up enough we should be flying, the theory being that we'll catch a Westerly which will take us directly to the Azores. The unknown factor in this is the strength of the storm which is on its way towards us with winds of up to a possible 30-40 kn. So we are on a rapid training course of how to deal with the situation . Filippo, our onboard nerd is frankly "worried". We're working on dropping spinnakers in a hurry and stowing booms if and when it becomes necessary . It is getting colder and as you can see from the photo we are obviously no longer in Caribbean waters! To add to this we just lost a beautiful tuna , the first we had 'caught ' since we left. Really depressed by having lost this battle but this is balanced by thinking that when I am back on land I will use  StarCraft (NB a game ), and be unbeatable as I am now an expert  on the night skys! The whole ocean experience is making me  feel very alive,  I spend  hours scouring the sea for whales . In the evening  I find the sunsets extremely moving and  life is coming into balance reminding me how much of my time is wasted on banalities   instead of enjoying time with family and friends or failing to follow up on my dreams.

Finally  we are now at a count of four suicides .......flying fish............ on  Milanto's deck . One I have called Rambaudo.(for non-nerd: a character in StarCaraftll)  // -3 gg to the storm //  Position : 26°56' N - 50°58' W //  Detox. : 3%

.....and on the 5th day

The 5th day of sailing 15 knots of wind and high pressure over Milanto as she sails close-hauled towards the Azzores . We have seen our first smallish whales who seem quite shy! They appear,or at least I like to think so, that my guitar music, especially the  ballads and less so  the rock & roll, attracts them!   Have seen stunning dawns and sunsets and moral is high among the crew . Our 'nerd'  is learning to tie knots, trim the sails, and take a reef too. Today, a break-through ,for the first time he has not woken up talking about video games and apps! The cure has begun.

Yesterday, a large cargo ship passed by 4 miles from us, the first  life form seen on this infinite expanse of water since we left Antigua . At night the waves seem like hills which move slowly rising up under the keel . The ocean breathes and makes one feel  part of a large and natural organism. This reminds me of the words of the great mystic Angelus Silesius: "The Rose is without a 'wherefor'—she blooms because she blooms." (The Cherubinic Pilgrim -1657).

3 storms and 3 days later!

Translation below.......

We have already met with 3 storms, one at night.. Getting under these has been a unique experience : a black front coming at you like the mouth of a giant fish. The wind drops as a sinister warning of worse to come. Then it spits you out ,and you see stars! Filippo is terrified by what valerio terms 'the fear of the unknown '. They are the night devils who are going to cure our 'nerd'. Filippo is still dreaming of  his favourite video games! For the rest of us the yacht is becoming more like a home every day.  This morning, during my watch  I saw one of the most beautiful dawns of my life -a tone of blue I had never seen before.  L.C
